The Swiss Rambler, a blogger who specialises in crunching the numbers, has provided a fascinating insight into the workings of the football club after running a fine tooth comb through the Sky Blues accounts published this month for the period of 2020/21. Among his interesting findings and comparisons with rival Championship clubs, he revealed that City’s £4.7million loss was small fry compared to the likes of Bristol City, Reading and Middlesbrough.

The club’s operating loss, meanwhile, which was down to £4.4m, was the second smallest in the division. And to emphasise the challenge faced by Mark Robins’s men competing back in the second tier, the club’s £11.8m revenue, which was up from £3.8m despite the pandemic, was the lowest in the Championship, which is put into perspective further when compared to the likes of Norwich City (£57m) and Cardiff City (£55m) who benefited from parachute payments.

In terms of fees paid out for new players, City spent £3.5m, which was their highest for many years, including Gustavo Hamer from PEC Zwolle for a reported £1.3m, which was the first time club has had net spend (rather than net sales) in a decade. That was said to still be relatively small for the Championship, but only just below East Midland rivals Nottingham Forest.

City’s wage bill, meanwhile, which doubled to £13.2m, was still one of the lowest in the Championship and a staggering £50m less than the likes of Norwich and Brentford. Here’s the full and extensive findings from the Swiss Rambler ‘s comprehensive assessment of the accounts:

The table that puts Coventry City above Nottingham Forest and Fulham

Coventry City have a glimmer of hope in their pursuit of a Championship play-off spot, but the table could be looking far different if only stoppage time goals counted.

The Sky Blues find themselves 11th in the standings, six points adrift of the top six, and face a crucial run-in with fixtures against Blackburn Rovers (6th), Nottingham Forest (9th), Fulham (1st), Bournemouth (2nd) and Huddersfield Town (4th) coming up.

When it comes down to late goals, however, Mark Robins ‘ side would be barely sweating over the promotion race; in fact, the Sky Blues would be nine points clear of third place.

Robins’ side have scored nine goals after the 90 minute mark and have won each game when they have done so. The Sky Blues have yet to concede a goal in second half stoppage-time.

And that commitment shown by Coventry City would have had the Sky Blues sat in a lofty position if the legal table only counted goals scored after 90 minutes.
